This day also marks the 1883 fire at the Newhall Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which killed 71 people. General Tom Thumb — of P.T. Barnum fame — escapes unscathed. And, on this date in 1958 Jerry Lee Lewis' song Great Balls of Fire reaches number one on the pop-single charts. Around the corner from the burning sphere department today in 1994 Lorena Bobbitt goes on trial for cutting off her husband's penis while he sleeps. (Did I mention it is also Peculiar People Day?) To top things off, so to speak, it is the birthday of Linda Lovelace, Deep Throat porn-star/actress — and later anti-pornography activist.
