Speaking of heat, on this very day in 1826 English chemist John Walker invented the friction match. And, as it happens, this is also the birthday (1942; Seattle, Washington) of Jimi Hendrix — extraordinary rock singer, songwriter and guitarist, one of whose notable songs is named Fire.
